I think every freelance writer struggles to find work. Or at least work that pays more than a few bucks at a time. Everything seems to offer $5 here, $10 there. It seems like it’ll take ages before you make any substantial money.
But, if you take the time and gain some experience, you can rack up some earnings. Sure, taking those little jobs will eventually add up, but there are some more substantial opportunities. For example, the following magazines will pay a $500 or more per contribution.
  1. Tai Chi Magazine
This magazine is centered on the Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. It is looking for articles regarding self-defense, meditation, self-improvement, health, fitness, traditional Chinese medicine, as well as spiritual growth. Written articles can be anywhere in length from 500 to 3,500 words. The magazine will pay from $75 to $500 per article depending on length and quality. You usually receive payment within 90 days of print.
  1. Catholic Digest
Catholic Digest is looking for writers who have a generally positive and encouraging tone who can write from their own experiences. Features in this magazine are usually around 1,500 words and cover topics like spirituality, marriage, parenting, and relationships. They also often discuss parish and work issues. You will be paid $500 for features after the issue is published.
  1. Earth Island Journal
Earth Island Journal covers many environmental issues including animal rights, wildlife, land conservation, environmental issues, climate, and energy. They are looking for stories that are ahead of the times, anticipating events and trends before they happen.
Payment is 25 cents per word for short pieces. These are usually around 1,200 to 1,500 words.  Investigative features can run closer to 2,500 to 3,000 words. By that math, a 2,000 word story would earn you $500. For those new to the magazine, Earth Island Journal recommends pitching online reports with pay $50-$100.
  1. VQR
VQR is a journal of literature that focuses on publishes the highest quality writing that they can find. They pay $200 per poem (limit four). IF they accept a group that contains five or more poems, they will pay $1,000. You can earn 25 cents per word for prose. Book reviews are the big earner here, netting you $500 for 2,000-2,400 words. The only catch is VQR has limited reading periods so be sure to check the schedule online for when to submit.
  1. AMC Outdoors Magazine
This magazine covers outdoor recreation and conversation topics around the Northern Appalachian region. This area includes the states from Maine to Virginia. Features pay $500-$700 and are generally around 2,000-2,500 words. Anything unique or that has a new spin on something will catch an AMC Outdoors editors’ eye.
  1. The Sun Magazine
The Sun is looking for essays, fiction, poetry, and interviews. They lean towards personal writing, but they do accept pieces centered on political and cultural issues. The Sun will shell out $300 to $2,500 for nonfiction, $300 to $1,500 for fiction, $100 to $200 for poetry, and $1,000 to $2,000 for interviews. Previously published pieces will be considered, but will only earn half the price of an original, unpublished piece of writing.
  1. The Nation
This liberal opinion magazine covers both national and international affairs. Most of their articles are centered on things like civil rights, economics, the environment, feminists’ issues, and politics. Foreign issues that are covered include socio-economic issues. The Nation relies heavily on investigative reporting. The Nation will pay $250 for comments about 750 words in length and $500 for articles. Articles tend to be about 1,500 to 2,500. Investigative reports are upwards of 6,000 words, but prices vary.
  1. The American Gardener
This is the official publication of the American Horticultural Society. It focuses on issues of import to amateur gardeners. It looks for writers with horticultural backgrounds and articles about new and unique ways to garden designing, plant conservation, biodiversity, and other topics. The American Gardener pays between $300 and $600 for articles which are between 1,500 and 2,500 words. The magazine will sometimes offer travel and expense reimbursement.
  1. One Story
One Story is a literary magazine that features just one story per issue. It is mailed out every 3-4 weeks. It prints literary fiction stories that are between 3,000 and 8,000 words that are of any subject. The chosen writer will be paid $500 and given 25 copies of the magazine for each accepted contribution.
  1. Glimmer Train Stories
This magazine seeks original stories. It is published only three times each year, but payment can be as high as $1,500 for first place submissions in certain categories. However, the “standard” category for stories less than 12,000 words pays just $700. Submissions for these standard stories are open in January, May, and September. The magazine owns the first publishing rights to any story they accept

Instead of feeling defeated when an article is rejected, you’ll see it as a learning experience, and even a way to build a relationship with the editor. The key is to keep writing, and keep submitting
